MSU Football Recruiting: Matt Broussard

Labels: 0 comments

While I my primeary interest is in Montana Basketball I still hope to post occational football and other sports info as I run accross it for those who maybe intersted.

I found this on the Rivals.com.

The recent OldCoach combine at Coppell brought out plenty of talent at a variety of positions. However, it's no secret that the state of Texas always produces plenty of top notch talent at the quarterback position.

So it stands to reason that there were several impressive gunslingers in attendance at Coppell. While the big name going into the camp was Allen's Matt Brown, it was another Matt that shared the spotlight. Lindale quarterback Matt Broussard took home top honors for the position. While he feels he could have done even better, he's pretty satisfied with taking home the MVP trophy.

"I felt like I did good, especially for it being my first combine and not really knowing what to expect," Broussard said. "My 40-time could have been a little faster but that's just some stuff I need to work on. Then again I did get top quarterback for a reason so I can't be too hard on myself."

What makes his accomplishment even more impressive is that due to an incident, Broussard wasn't exactly well rested for the combine.

"I actually had to go to the hospital the night before so I didn't get as much rest as I would have liked. I still felt like I did good though. It was a really good combine. It was put together really well," Broussard said. "My brother accidentally hit me in the face with a golf club the night before. It was a pretty rough night."

The 6-foot, 170-pound Broussard has actually only been playing quarterback for a couple years now.

"Most people don't know I have only been playing quarterback for like a year and a half. I had been playing receiver," Broussard said.

Despite winning quarterback MVP for the camp, Broussard doesn't expect to play the position in college. In fact he's still unsure as to which side of the ball he'll end up on.

"Most likely from speaking with my coach, I'll be going to college as a utility player. I'm getting looked at as a defensive back or possibly on offense some. As long as I'm on the field, I don't care," Broussard said.

He has the speed to play either of those positions. He recorded one of the top 40-times at the combine with 4.58.

So far though, Broussard hasn't been able to really get his name out there. However, if he continues to have performances like he did at the combine, he can expect to hear from a lot more schools.

"I've just been hearing from some smaller schools. I hadn't gotten out to enough combines yet to really get my name out there. I've been talking to Tulsa and I'm going there April 18th for a junior day. Then Montana State has been calling a lot," Broussard said.

While Broussard took home quarterback MVP, Matt Brown took home the overall MVP for the combine. He recorded an impressive and somewhat surprising 40-time of 4.54 seconds. However, his talent was certainly not doubted considering he led the Allen Eagles to a state championship. The 6-foot, 175-pound quarterback has already collected offers from Nebraska, Arizona and Kansas State.

MSU- Billings gets a Commit

I just heard that MSU Billings just got a commit from Deandre Chambers of Western Oklahoma State College a JC in Texas. Chambers is a 6-foot-1, 180 pounder who averaged 7.4 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting 37.8 percent from three-point range this season. A defensive stopper, Chambers usually drew the opposition's best scorer, and had a 1.03 assist / turnover ratio. He is originally from Monroe, N.C.

MSU recruit update: Jeff Budinich

Labels: 0 comments

ESPN has updated it's evaluation on Montana State recruit Jeff Budinich. Here is what they say.

March, 2009: Budinich is one of the better sleepers in the west and a relative unknown outside of Washington. What standouts about his game is his ability to score in a variety of ways. He has a intriguing skill package that is quite versatile. He can be a potent scorer in the paint area and can knock down the mid-range jump shot with regularity. In addition, he can demonstrate his feel for the game with his ability to pass. One area of concern, however, is his effort level-he has a tendency to take plays off. With his ability to score inside and out, he should make an immediate
impact at Montana State.

They also update they evaluation score to a 70.

Here is what that means

70-79: Major/Mid-Major Prospect Player
either can earn a scholarship to a top national Division I program or contribute
significantly as a freshman at the mid-major level.

Midland Roundtable announces Montana All Stars

Labels: , , , 5 comments

The Midland Roundtable announced the rosters for the annual Montana / Wyoming All-Star game yesterday. The boy’s team lacks the star power, with only one D-1 basketball player on the roster, but should be one of the deeper teams in recent memory, and one the better perimeter shooting

Montana-Wyoming All-Star basketball rosters
(college choices)

Montana boys

Tanner Bleskin, 6-4, Great Falls CMR – (MSU football)
Michael Crandell, 6-2, Scobey
Derek Lear, 5-10, Fairfield
Ben Cutler, 5-11, Kalispell Glacier
Peter Stordahl, 6-2, Billings West
Colt Idol, 6-3, Whitefish - (MSU) pictured
Joel Barndt, 6-7, Billings Central - (Rocky Mountain)
Eric Halverson, 6-5, Billings West -
Bryce Carver, 6-1, Dillon
Gabe Rucker, 6-1, Bozeman

Coach: Bill Dreikosen, Rocky Mountain College.

Montana girls

The girls’ team should be one of the best teams that Montana has put together in recent memory. It is a team with great size, shooting ability, and a ton of star power with 5 (so far) D-1 basketball players on the roster including one of the top girls high school players in the country in Joslyn Tinkle. The other thing about this team is that a lot of them have played together in AAU ball over the past summer. I don’t know the Wyoming team yet but they better be ready this team is loaded.

Joslyn Tinkle, 6-3, Missoula Big Sky – (Stanford) pictured
Rachel Semansky, 6-0, Highwood – (Montana State)
Ashley Albert, 6-1, Hamilton - (Montana State)
Chelsea Banis, 6-4, Fairfield – (Montana State)
Megan Patterson, 5-11, Columbus – (Weber State)
Brianne Holland-Stergar, 6-2, Butte
Kalli McCloskey, 5-8, Butte
Kelsey Hildal, 5-8, Kalispell Flathead
Cassidy Wendell, 5-8, Whitehall
Monica Hollowell, 5-6, Huntley Project

Coach: Brian Henderson, Rocky Mountain College.

If you get the chance you should check these games out they are always a lot of fun. The games are June 12 at Sheridan College and June 13 at Rocky. The girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. both nights.

Montana State recruits JC Teammates

Labels: 0 comments

I have heard that Montana State is recruiting two team mates Chris Walker and Michael Acoff from Wallace Community College located in Selma Alabama. Both Walker and Acoff were named first team all-Region 22 and first team all-conference for Wallace. Wallace had a remarkable turn around this year, after finishing the 2007-8 year with only 2 wins. Wallace hired a new coach who retooled the team around Walker and Acoff, going from a slow down methodical offensive style to a fast-paced, aggressive defensive and offensive style that Walker and Acoff excelled in. Wallace made the playoffs this year for the first time in 10 years.

Michael Acoff is a 6-7, 235 power forward who also played center for Wallace this past year. He averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and 1 block per game while shooting 52% from the field and 60% from the free throw line. Acoff is an athletic interior banger and a petty good defender. He is not going to be shooting much past 15 feet, but can score either facing the basket or with his back to the basket. Right now he hold offers from Montana State and Alabama State, but a handful of schools now are getting interested.

Walker is a 6-6, 195 a combo forward who played all three of the front line positions for Wallace, averaging 18.7 points ,13 rebounds, 2.5 blks, 2 assists, 2 steals while 58% overall, and 36% three point range. He also managed 72% from the free throw line. Walker is a very athletic slasher with a great set of springs. He is a physical player but not a traditional “banger” he gets the job done inside with his elbows and superior athletisism. Of the two he is the most highly recruited with Montana State, Alabama State, Florida A&M, Troy, South Alabama, and Southeast Missouri State all showing strong interest.

I understand these two guys are room mates and very good friend, and I have been told that they would like to play together next year. That said every year I hear about good friends wanting to go some place as a package deal, but when push comes to shove it never seems to work out that way.

Bobcats to gain a new Coach and Lose a Player….

…. And it is the same guy.

It will be announced today that James Hennessy will be announcing his retirement as a Bobcat basketball today. Hennessy who would be a 5th year senior next season had to recently undergo major knee surgery, that will keep him in rehab and off the court for well into next year’s season at the earliest. It is my understanding that Hennessy has always been interested in coaching and was approached by the coaches about becoming a graduate assistant coach next year, for the Cat’s. It is always tough to see a player end his career this way,and I wish him all the best with his rehab.

Hennessy retirement will open up a scholarship for the spring signing period.

Bobcat Recruit JC Guard

Labels: 0 comments

I have heard that the Bobcat coaches are very interested in Mike James a 6-2 guard from Eastern Arizona J.C. Eastern Arizona is the same school that current Bobcat guard Will Bynum is from. Both the Cat’s and Griz recruited James as a high school player and the Griz might be still interested in James also. James played basketball in Oregon so both programs know him well. He is a JC qualifier which means he will have three years of eligibility at the D-1 level. In high school he played for Grant High school that featured two other D-1 players, and played for the Oregon 6a championship and was know as a play maker who could shoot the ball from deep beyond the 3 point line. This year as a true freshman at Eastern Arizona JC he averaged 20 points, 5 assist and 2 steals a game while shooting 40% from 3 point range and 82% from the free throw line. He was also named all ACCAC first team all conference this year for Eastern Arizona. His recruiting has taken off lately and he was placed at Eastern Arizona by Utah State, but they want him to spend two years at EAJC.
