This is the third in a series of four posts on the Griz men’s basketball team, discussing the past season and a look ahead to next season. The four post shall be as followed, Part 1 Season Wrap up, Part 2 Look ahead: Big Men, Part 3 Look Ahead: Wing players and Part 4 Look Ahead: Recruits. Taking a look at the Wings The Griz look pretty solid at the 1, 2, and 3 with all starters returning. I have heard talk that the Griz may be looking to move Johnson back to the shooting guard spot, but I am not sure if that would help the team. When Johnson has the ball good things happen and while, I think that the Griz might benefit from running a two point guard with Johnson playing one of those spots, the Griz are a much better team with the ball in Johnson’s hands. The advantages of the two point guard offense, may allow someone else to guard / press the opponents point, but yet still allow Johnson to bring the ball up court on offense. This may save some of Johnson energy while allowing while keeping the ball in his hands on offense. The Griz will, lose point guard Elgin-Taylor next year and, I am also hearing, another point guard may be looking to leave the program. The point guard position could be an area that the Griz coaches may need to address in their spring recruiting. While McGillis and Staudacher return as starters look for those spots to be challenged, by Banney, Taylor and/or possibly others. I also expect incoming freshman Will Cherry to make an immediate impact off the bench for the Griz. Cherry is a multi-talented player, who is the gem of Tinkle’s fall recruiting class. He is capable of playing both guard spot, and is an out standing defender, good scorer, great passer, and comes from a winning program. Cherry will make a role for himself on the program while he waits to take it over. Do not be surprised to see Cherry and Johnson on the floor at the same time.
