After two months on Google’s Blogspot site I have decided to move my blog over to Wordpress site. The new format will allow me to do a few more things that I want, plus I am able to really improve the look of the site. Wordpress’s format is not as intuitive and Blogspots and it has taken me a while to figure it all out, but over all it will improve the way I can present information. Please follow the link below to my new site:

Binford Wraps it Up

Labels: , , , 2 comments

With the announcement of Beata Bak’s signing Montana States Tricia Binford, wrapped up her spring recruiting 2007. Binford will be adding 7 players to go along with 7 returning players for next season. It will also leave one scholarship open so it is possible that she could sign another player over the summer, if she chose to. That will be a lot of new players coming on board that she will have to evaluate and work into the system. The returnees are very experienced and talented, plus bring a lot of leadership qualities with them so that should help quite a bit next fall. The other thing that should really be an asset for this team is the flexibility of the players and Binford’s system in the system that should allow Binford to get her best players on the court. It is clear, though, that at least four of these players will need to be ready to contribute right away. It should also allow Binford to redshirt a few players, a luxury she has not had in the past. Binford talked to Dave Griffiths of Abcmontana.com talked to Binford about this class, it is a very interesting interview that you should check out.

It is very early and Binford's 14 person roster has a lot of work to put in before next season but this how I see the two deep for next year.

PG: Perry, Erica
Back-up: Ally Schmitt
2G: Katie Bussey
Back-up: Lyndi Seidensticker
SF: Jenny Heringer
Back-up: Janette Jackson
PF: Sarah Strand
Back-up: Rachel Semansky / Chelsea Banis /Ashley Albert
Center A: Beata Bak
Center B Thornton, Jamie

Again as I have said before, a lot can change in the next 6 months, and most of the players listed about can play more than one positions, so I reserve the right to revisit the above.
Edit 4-30-09: I really screwed up a few thing in this post that I have corrected plus below are some links that I forgot to put in the post:

Update: Helena Capital's Matt Miller

Found this on Rivals.com. Found it interesting

It's not very often that two brothers from different universities are assigned as the official recruiting coaches of one of the nation's most versatile players, but when it comes to Class of 2010 athlete Matt Miller, this is the case.

Miller, out of Helena (MT) Helena Capital, has offers to play college football from over 11 universities and two of the schools that have been showing him the most interest thus far are Colorado State and Arizona State.

"Right now the schools looking at me the most are Arizona State, Stanford, Boise State, Oregon, Washington State and Colorado State," Miller said. "I guess you could say there's a lot of Pac-10 influence."

What really makes the CSU and ASU connections interesting is that brothers Marc and Matt Lubick of the Rams and Sun Devils, respectively, are both Miller's recruiting coaches. Both are the sons of legendary Colorado State coach Sonny Lubick.

Miller says he's not too familiar with the football program in Fort Collins, but talks to Marc about once a month. He also says that even though the Lubick brothers are recruiting him, neither take light-hearted jokes at the other, but in fact talk the other brother up.

"They actually talk each other up quite a bit—it seems like it's a really friendly rivalry between the two."

This spring, Miller is staying in shape by trying to bring yet another track and field state championship to Helena Capital. Partially enhanced by his presence on the track, his speed is what helps make his game so solid. In 2008 he had 932 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns to go along with 663 yards and six scores rushing, primarily on reverse plays. Miller is listed on his team's roster as a wide receiver.

This versatility in his game is what has Boise State coming to visit him on Friday, Stanford coming to see him next week and ASU's Matt Lubick coming to visit him in person later in May.

As for the upcoming school year, Miller just wants to live the life of a "normal" high school senior.

"I just want to enjoy it. I want to hang out with my friends a lot because as soon as I go off to college I won't be seeing them as much as I'd like to. I really just want to be a normal guy, a normal senior, and have a lot of fun

Kelsey Hildal to Walk-on with the Griz

Labels: , 0 comments

The Lady Griz have received a commitment from Kalispell’s 5-4 Kelsey Hildal. Hildal is dynamo on the floor from the point guard position, averaging about 19 points a game. Her high game this season was a 39 point out burst against Missoula Big Sky. Hildal is the first Montana player this year to commit to the Griz and should be a great walk-on pick up for the Griz. With a little seasoning … i.e. a redshirt year and maybe a development year she should be able to give the Griz a nice change of pace option off the bench.

As a walk-on she will not sign an official letter of intent and will have free to accept any other offer that may come her way, up until she starts classes at UM.

Binford signs a JC MVP

Labels: , 0 comments

Beata Bak from Miles City Community College has committed to play for the Lady Cats next year. Bak a power forward who is listed at any where from 6-0 to 6-2 (I believe 6-0 is closer to the truth) averaged 17 points 9 rebounds 2 steals a game, while shooting 48% from the field, 33% from three point and 71% from the line. Bak was named MonDak Women’s Basketball Conference MVP. She had five conference games where she finished with double-doubles, including a 30 point and 20 rebound outing against Bismarck State. Bak, who originally hails from Poland, Led MCCC to a 21-7 overall record and 11-3 in the Mon/Dak Conference record this season.

Bak who played all three front court positions at MCC should make an immediate impact for the lady Cat’s next season, giving Binford a quality player, who brings a great deal of experience to what will be a pretty young team.

Bobcat recruit Alpha N'Diaye

Labels: , 0 comments

The Bobcats are recruiting a JC center from Ohlone Junior College in California named Alpha N'Diaye. N’Diaye is a 6-9 center who averaged 10 points, 8 rebound and 3 blocks a game while shooting 53% from the field and 58%from the line. N’Diaye is originally from Africa and has only been playing organized basketball for the past 3-4 years. He is a very athletic player, and with a 7-1 wing span would fit the bill for the new key word in college basketball as “plays long”. He earned second team all Northern Division in the California JC ranks, and is ranked by numerous web sites as a top California D-1 recruit. Ohlone JC finished the season with a 25-9 record and was ranked in the California JC top 20 most of the season.

Here is what the website jucojuntion had to say about N’Diaye last August.

Alpha N'Diaye (SO) 6-foot-8 (215) from Mali, Africa, averaged 5 ppg and 4.7 rebounds last season for the Renegades. Alpha has really only played one year of organized basketball

"Alpha is a high major athlete, he has added 15 pounds to his frame since coming back from visiting his mother in Mali. While in Mali he got malaria and his now just getting back to full strength,".

N'Diaye has a 7'1 wingspan.

As you might guess N’Diaye is still a little bit raw. He has pretty solid low post offensive game and is a very good natural rebounder. He does though need to work some on his defense, the effort is there, but not the technique. He had a tendency to get him self into foul trouble in quite a few game. When he stayed out of foul trouble he was a solid double double guy. His beat game of the season was a 19 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 block outing.

I talked to Bret Swanson of Jucojunction today and he tells me N’Diaye is deciding between Montana State and Sacramento State.

Questions on Bobcat Recruit Dominique O’Connor

Labels: , 0 comments

I have fielded a handful of questions the last few months on Bobcat recruit Dominique O’Connor from Westchester high school in Los Angeles. My response as of late, has been, that I do not thing we have much of a chance and are probably not recruiting him any more. It sounds like I am only half right.

Just to review, Dominique O’Connor is a 5-9 to 5-10 true point guard, with a set of jets, who averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 2.3 steals a game. He was named the LA City player of the year by a panel of sportswriters. His Westchester high school team went 34-2 this year winning the California state championship. In the championship game his Westchester team beat future Grizzly, Will Cherry’s McClymonds high school. O’Connor’s stock has been going through the roof this year, from a possible D-2 or Low D-1 recruit to a possible Pac-10 caliber player right now.

A few weeks back I read an article where O’Connor stated he wanted to stay close to home, and had crossed a handful of teams off his list that did not meet those requirements. He also stated, USC, Fresno State, San Francisco and San Diego State his four favorites, and schools he wanted to visit. At that time USC had not offered him but was the team he grew up cheering for. In an article published in Scout.com today, O’Connor mentions that that USC offered him this week end and they have moved to the head of his list with San Francisco second and a trip scheduled to Fresno State for this week-end. Now despite this he did, though, mention that he is also still receiving recruiting interest from Montana State, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and Santa Clara, and he may entertain a visit from one of them. It looks like the Bobcat’s are kind of sort-of still in the picture. So for the extreme optimists among you keep you fingers crossed, but I would not go printing up any jerseys quite yet.

Bobcats recruit Shawn Grant

Labels: 0 comments

The Bobcat’s have been recruiting Shawn Grant of St. Francis high school in Mountain View California since last spring, and he still appears to be on their short list this spring. Grant’s recruiting has been a rather curious affair. The 6-4 Grant had a nice junior season, but really stepped it up his senior year averaging 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assist, 2 steals while shooting 40% from 3 point land. He is a pretty athletic player featuring 36 inch vertical and good quicks. He also has an excellent student. He was both all leaguing first team as well as All-Mercury News Boys Basketball first team. Here is what the Mercury News had to say about him:

SHAWN GRANT, ST. FRANCIS
Guard, 6-4, sr.
Grant was the go-to man in crunch time for the Lancers, who won a share of the West Catholic Athletic League title by beating Sacred Heart Cathedral in the WCAL tournament final. Grant delivered a clutch fadeway jumper late in the game to put the Lancers ahead. The co-MVP of the WCAL has a scholarship offer from Toledo and averaged 15.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game as the Lancers won the Central Coast Section Division II title before advancing to the NorCal final
.

He was also named to the Nor-Cal Preps top 10 players (along with Montana recruit Will Cherry) in northern California. Here is what they had to say about Grant

Guard: SHAWN GRANT
Senior, St. Francis Grant closed out an impressive senior year with a 24 point performance against Rocklin. The WCAL Co-Player of the Year led the Lancers to one of the regions most impressive turnarounds.

Now despite this from what I am hearing Grant’s only offer so far this spring is from Toledo, although Nevada, UAB, Loyola Chicago, Montana State and Davidson are still involved. It would seem to me that a kid with his credentials would be a little more hotly recruited, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Great Falls Tribune Girls Super State team Announced

Labels: , , , 0 comments

The Great Falls Tribune girls Super-State team was announced today, and you should go and check out the Trib’s excellent article on the team. Here is their list of players and where they are planning to play school next year.

Joslyn Tinkle, 6-3 Missoula Big Sky (Stanford)
Chelsea Banis, 6-4, Fairfield. (Montana State)
Rachel Semansky, 6-0 , Highwood (Montana State)
Ashley Albert, 6-1, Hamilton (Montana State)
Kelsi Brekke, 5-7, Helena Capital (Carroll College)
Megan Patterson, 5-8, Columbus (Weber State)
Jordan Sullivan, 6-2 , Sidney (junior)
Carly Selvig, 6-2 , Glendive (junior)
Lexie Nelson, 5-9, Butte High (junior)
Torry Hill, 5-7, Anaconda (junior)

Looking over the list, the one name I would have added to the list would be sophomore 5-8 Kalli Durham of Miles City, but then who would I take off? That really is a pretty impressive, though of girls basketball players. In a couple years you are not only going to be seeing 9 of the 10 players playing D-1 ball, but you will see them excelling at the next level.

Bobcats and Griz lose out on Point Guard

Labels: , 0 comments

Normally I do not, do a lot of posting on on players the Griz or Cats do not get. I do get questions from time to time though on players I have mentioned before, and I am happy to give an update if someone is curiuos, though. Sometimes though who the schools do not get is as telling as who they do land.

I have heard that bothe the Bobcats and Griz were recruiting 5-9 point guard
Amir Rashid from Trinity Valley Community College in Texas. Trinity is a traditional power in the Texas JC ranks. Rashid averaged 12 points, 5.3 assists and two steals per game this season and was selected 3rd Team NJCAA All-Region XIV. I beleive he was a prime target of both programs but he recently commited to Central Michigan University after an official visit.

Helena's Matt Miller gets some nationa Attention

I found this atricle on Rivals.com this today and thought I would share it. I am post only the section that deals with Capitals high schools Matt Miller.

Montana is hardly one of the nation's top recruiting hot spots, but college coaches this spring will be flocking to Big Sky Country to check out athlete Matt Miller of Helena Capital.

Montana's Matt Miller is getting national attention. For the first time in quite some time, Miller could be a national recruit from the state.

He already has scholarship offers from Stanford, Boise State, Oregon State, Arizona State, Wyoming, Colorado State, Washington State, Oregon, Montana, Montana State, Harvard and Dartmouth. He is also starting to get some major attention from national powers all over the country.

"Matt is a tremendous athlete," Capital coach Pat Murphy said. "He's probably the best football recruit to come out of Montana in a long time."

What makes Miller such an attractive prospect is his versatility.

At 6 feet 4 and 205 pounds, Miller was named the state's offensive most valuable player at receiver in 2008. Last year, he had 932 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns. He also had an additional 663 yards on the ground and six more scores. Miller also was named to the all-state team on defense in both 2007 and 2008 and helped his team win state championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

"He could play big-time football at receiver, defensive back or linebacker," Murphy said. "I think his best chance at success would be to play safety or outside linebacker. He is 6-4, 205 now, but he could easily put on 30 pounds in a few years. Then you would have a very fast athletic 6-4, 235-pound wrecking ball.

"But again, he is a great receiver, too, because he runs so well."

Murphy said Miller is a complete player both on and off the field.

"What makes him special is his size and speed," Murphy said. "Even though he is tall, he moves like a quick little guy. He has speed, athleticism and can jump. To top it off, he is aggressive and has great football instincts. He is very smart as well and takes honors classes. He's the complete package."

A complete package who is about to become one of the most heavily recruited players in the nation.

"We're excited about the amount of attention Matt's received so far," Murphy said. "But we're not surprised. He's a very talented player and is worthy of all of the interest that he's been receiving."

Now would someone tell this guy that basketball is where his true calling is at. OK maybe not, but I can dream can not I. Seriously it is really great to see a Montana Kid get this kind of nationa;l attention.

6 days 4 programs 1 signing

It has almost a week and the only confirmed signing that has been reported by the Bobcat or Grizzlies at this point. The one athlete that has been reported is Rachel Semansky by Tricia Binford’s Lady Bobcats. North Idaho College and the Spokane Review reported last week that Michel Swita has signed with the Bobcats, but nothing official from MSU.

I thing I keep hearing though, is that this signing period has been incredibly difficult, more so for the men than the women to get things done this spring. It seems that between the NCAA tourney, Easter, and high school basketball last into March coaches have been having a very hard time getting in to prospective students homes and then on campus. This is even worse for JC players. A lot of players are just now in the middle of taking their trips, and if a player takes all 5 trips it could be a while before things shake out. The other thing that drags this whole thing out is that Tinkle, Huse and Selvig have a history of waiting until they have all or most of their recruits signed before issuing a press release.

Here is what I hear.

Bobcat Men: I was told that the Bobcats will announce a group of signees today or tomorrow. I expect it will be Michel Swita and Colt Idol … possibly more but I doubt it. I believe they are waiting on a couple athletes who have already been on campus who are priority.

Bobcat Women: While announcing Semansky’s signing Binford said she hopes to announce two more signees this week. I believe both recruits are already committed, with one being 6-0 Carrie Ojeda and the other is unknown (to me) at this point.

Griz Men: No word on anything yet, but I have been keeping my eye 5-7 point guard Steven Bennett of Citrus JC in California who I have heard the Griz are looking hard at. Four of Bennett’s team mates from Citrus JC have already committed, but not him. Also high schooler Marcus Tibbs is in the midst of taking his trips and it appear to be looking hard at Montana and Portland State after San Francisco and Montana State have backed off.

Lady Griz. Typically Robin gets this done quick so I would expect to hear something early this week.

Bobcat Season Awards

I attended the annual end of the season men’s basketball 6th Man Club Banquet last night, in Bozeman. Awards were given out, DVD high lights were watched and handed out, players and coaches introduced, and general fun was had by all. Here is a list of the awards that were given out, as best my memory can muster.

Coach or stats based awards

Most Charges Taken Award: Eric Rush
It must be noted that Rush beat out Brandon Johnson by only1 charge this year, this notable because Brandon had 3 total charges taken in his first two years. This was a point of emphasis for Brandon this year.

Academic Award: Brandon Johnson
Brandon will graduate this semester, and will come back as a graduate student next year.

Weight Room Award: Eric Rush
2nd year in a row Eric has won this award.

Community Service Award: Austin Brown

Player Voted Awards:

Most Improve Award: Austin Brown

Defensive Player Award: Divaldo Mbunga
Huse mentioned that he thought Divaldo was robbed for the league defensive award. Will Bynum as a strong contender,

Team MVP: Divaldo Mbunga

Bobcat Award: James Hennessy
Player who best represents the Bobcats on and off the court.

Additionally the M-Club presented Divaldo Mbunga with his jersey framed under glass.

I hope I did not miss any one or awards, I was not taking notes.

Lady Griz Recruit Update: Kenzie De Boer

Lady Griz recruit 6-0 Kenzie De Boer of Lynden high school in Washington had 20 points in 21 minutes of action in the annual Northwest Shootout. The Northwest Shootout is the annual Washington vs. Oregon all-star game that I equivalent to the Montana / Wyoming for all of you Montana centric folks like me out there. It features the top senior high school players in the State. De Boer is the only Washington based Montana / Montana State recruit (total of 6) among the Men’s or Women’s program to be invited to participate. De Boer lad all scorer, while Oregon had no answer for he during the game. Nine of Washington’s 10 players will be playing D-1 ball next year. As far as I can tell a game MVP was not awarded but if it had been De Boer would have been tough to beat. Here are some links to stories on the game.

Players coming and going rumors

Labels: 0 comments

I have been hearing a handful of rumors the last couple day’s about player’s comings and goings for the Bobcats and Griz.

Grizzlies Shawn Stockton: Despite what I have previously posted, I was by two sources with good knowledge of the Griz program, recently that it is not a done deal that he will be leaving. One source claims it is more likely than not that he will return. A couple weeks back I was talking with some folks out of Spokane and to them it seemed it was a done deal. The same Graz sources though, are now talking like Michael Taylor could now be looking to transfer. I don’t know what to think of this all other to sit back and watch and see what transpires, and see how much egg I get on my face. The one thing I do know is that the Griz coaches are out actively recruiting JC and High school points, and before to make room for any signee someone has to leave.

Bobcats Rachel Pauli: I have heard a rumor that she will not be back next year. This surprised quite a bit when I heard it. I had the chance to talk to one of the Women coaches a month or two back, and they brought up what a surprise Pauli was this past year. Essentially I was told that as a freshman she worked he butt off over the summer and showed up on campus ready to play. I was told bluntly that she had exceeded the coaches’ expectations as a freshman and had a bright future a head of her. The other strange thing about the conversation was that I started the conversation talking about Bussey and the coach changed the conversation to talk about Pauli. My guess if true, this is a player
driven decision.

Binford Announces the signing of Semansky

Labels: , 0 comments

Tricia Binford officially announced the signing of Highwood’s Rachel Semansky to a letter of intent. See the following article

The interesting thing about the article was at the of the press release it says that: "

Binford also indicated more signings could happen next week"

As in plural signies. Semansky represents the 6th player or new comer to to the 2009-10 team. Carrie Ojeda from Mount Tacoma high school in Washington who is rumoured (by me) to be one one of the fall signies would be the 7th, and possibly an 8th recruit also on board. That could be interesting. That also means, if we do sign another player beyond Ojeda that one of the returnie players may not be coming back. On paper it appears that we will have 8 players returning including redshirt Jannette Jackson, right now 6 players signed, maybe 2 more players yet to sign (including Ojeda) and only 15 scholarships allowed by the NCAA.

Carrie Ojeda to sign with the Bobcats

Labels: , 1 comments

Ok, Tom Brokow, I am going to call it. I am predicting based on exit polling of my different contacts, that Carrie Ojeda from Mount Tacoma high school in Washington will or has already signed on to play for Tricia Binford and Montana State Bobcats women’s team. Carrie Ojeda is a 6-0 player who averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 steals, and 2 assist while shooting 55% from the field (37% 3fg) and 60% from the line. For the first half of the season she led the state of Washington is scoring at over 26 per game, but had some injury problems mid season that hurt her average. Her best game of the season was a 42 points, 17 rebounds, and 7 blocks game against Mercer Island high school. Ojeda is an All-Narrows League Bay Division First Team selection. Ojeda is also a very accomplished track athlete, in the high jump, long / triple jumps and the 4x100 relays.

Ojeda is a typical Binford recruit, athletic and with the ability to play more than one position. While
Ojeda, was recruited by the ‘Cats to play the power forward spot, she has the toughness to play the center position, and the perimeter shooting, and athleticism to play the small forward. I think she will remind a lot of Cat fans of Nubia Garcia. She is a very physical player, who does not mind doing the dirty work, and plays defense. Her defense though is an area that she could use, a little bit of refinement in. As a shot blocker and an interior defender she has at time swatted/hacked too much at the ball. She needs to get a little smarter some times about how she plays defense.

This signee is a statement maker for Binford. With a real lack of 4’s and 5’s returning next year it must have been real tempting to recruit a quick fix JC big to round out her roster, but she went for the long term program building player in Ojeda. While Ojeda is going to have to battle incoming freshman Banis, and Semansky for playing time the returnees better show up ready to play next fall because they will be pushed

Signing Day: The Grizzlies

Labels: 0 comments

This is the second part of a two part series about the April signing period. Part 1 the Bobcats, Part 2 The Grizzlies

The Grizzly M
en: I believe the Griz will sign 1 player, with the outside chance of more during the late signing period. The Griz have been rather quiet this spring in the recruiting circle, at least as far as I can tell. Clearly though, they seem very interested in signing a point guard this spring. I have heard that they were recruiting point guards at the NJCCA tourney earlier last month, and almost all recruiting buzz I have heard has been around recruiting point guards. The seem to be recruiting JC’s the hardest but also looking at the high school ranks. I have a little bit of buzz around some big men hear and there but most of that seems to be focused on high school guy’s they were recruiting last fall. Just my gut feeling, but to me it seemed more “just in case” recruiting, than actively trying to fill a spot. Here is a name to keep an eye out for “just in case” 6-8 Brandon Durham from Washington.

The Lady Griz: Robin Selvig will sign two players this spr
ing and he will get it done early. Robin always signs all of his scholarships, and he always gets it done early. There is no doubt in my mind that Selvig will sign a point guard. Robin (almost) never signs JC’s and with only two point guards on his roster (one being a senior) he is going to need to get a freshman in this year to get her seasoned enough to play major minutes the following year. In his scheme of thing he will not have the luxury of bring in a JC next year. I have heard that they have at least one commit already.

Carrie Ojeda

Carrie Ojeda could be a player that either the Griz or the Cat’s sign this spring, or maybe not. A while a go I had heard a rumour the Lady Griz had received at least one verbal commit but no name. A couple days’ later I heard from another source I the Lady Cats received a commit from a post player from the Seattle Washington area. I talked to a source in Washington and she gave me a couple names that she the Cat’s may have gotten. Those names were more of an educated guess than any thing, so continued scratching around trying to see if I can identify the Montana State player. Last week another source told me that he has heard that Carrie Ojeda a 6-0 post player from Mount Tacoma had signed with Montana State ....... or may be Montana. That was followed up by another source emailing me and telling me no it was Montana who got Ojeda. Like I said earlier I do not know if one or the other or none of them will pick up Ojeda, but I am going to be curious to see where she does land..

Ojeda is cross between the Griz Sara Ena and Bobcat Nubia Garcia. She is a very athletic and physical (almost too physical) forward who is built more like a track athlete which she is. She runs the sprints and relay in track. She averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks a game. She also shoots the ball out to three point range. At one point this season she was averaging 26 points a game but had some knee and foul problems late in the season which knocked her average down.

Also keep an eye out for Marcissa McMillan and Sara Paponjak for no other reason than those names were thrown at me, too.

Signing Day: The Bobcats

Labels: , , , 2 comments

This is the first part of a two part series about the April signing period. Part 1 the Bobcats, Part 2 The Grizzlies

The Men: The Bobcats will initially sign two athletes in the first day’s of the signing period, and then there could be a week or two before any other players or signed. Michel Swita a 7-0 commit from France, by way of North Idaho committed last December and he will sign. Swita was one of two major targets the Bobcat’s identified for the November signing period, visited last October, but put off his decision until after the early signing period. I heard last fall he was getting recruiting attention from Eastern Washington and Tulsa. Brad Huse is very high on the long term prospects for Swita who will have 3 years of eligibility for the Cats. Swita has been slowed by a bone bruise in his knee most of the season at North Idaho. The other signee should be Colt Idol a 6-3 guard from Whitefish Montana. Colt also committed last December, with a couple day’s of Swita. The Bobcat coaches really thought Colt a hidden gem in Montana and really tried to keep their recruitment of Colt under the radar until he committed. If they would have had there way, I do not think they would have had Colt announce his commit until April 15th. These are the players we know about.

The Cats are also looking to sign at least one more (possibly two) more athletes this fall. There initial needs would seem to be a point guard to replace James Hennessy; it seems they are looking at the best players possible right now. I think you will see a tiered approach to their recruiting, and they are taking their time. I believe they have only had 1 or two athletes in this spring so far and those
athletes were high priority/ instant impact (high school) guy’s. I think they are going to see where they land with these players before bringing in the second tier if you will players. They also have a couple players who should just now be receiving ACT/SAT scores back. It could be a few weeks before thing shake out.

The Women: I believe the Women may sign two athletes this fall and get it done rather quickly. The one commit who we know is scheduled to sign in the first few day’s is Highwood’s 6-0 power forward Rachel Semansky who committed last January. Semansky is a big signee for Binford’s Bobcat’s because Semansky is another top notch Montana athlete to chose the Bobcat women’s team and help Binford chip away at the strangle hold the Lady Griz have had on recruiting Montana. Semansky is also important because she plays a position that the Cat’s will need help with and she has the talent to contribute next year. The second signee, if Binford does indeed fills up her 15 scholarships, should be a post player. I would have you check out Part 2 of these series for a possible signee.

Montana Recruiting Washington JC Big Man

I have heard that Montana Coach Wayne Tinkle is recruiting 6-7 230 lb. Ryan Sweet of Whatcom JC in Washington. Sweet averaged 19 points 10 rebounds 2 assist 1 steals while shooting 58% from the field, 43% from 3 point range, and 73% the free throw line. He was named NWAACC Northern Region first team All Conference, All Tournament Team first team in the conference championship, and additionally was named MVP the annual Sophomore All-Star Tournament which was recently played. Sweet is a physical big man, who can mix it up inside or take it out side to the three point arc. He comes from the same conference as Grizzly new comer of the year Anthony Johnson, and is considered, like Johnson, to be one of the top D-1 prospects in the NWAACC.

Montana Inquiring about PSU commit?

Labels: 0 comments

Earlier this winter, North Idaho JC point guard 5-11 Melvin Jones committed to Portland State, with the intention of signing a letter of intent this Wednesday. Prior to committing he had been also recruited by Montana, Weber State, CS Fullerton and San Diego. I have been told, that since Ken Bone accepted the Washington State head coaching position, a lot of schools have been inquiring whether Jones is still planning to honor his commit to Portland State. Among the schools inquiring is/was Montana. During his original recruiting process Montana was considered a leader for his services. Jones has had a great year at NIC and has really improved his stock this winter and is now considered to be one of the best scoring point guards in the west. I do not have any concrete info on what his plans are but, I am told that if Portland State hires Bones lead assistant, it is highly likely Jones will sign with PSU. Another possibility is that Jones could look to see if he could follow Bone to Washington State, but it is not sure whether WSU needs a point at this point. The final option would be to re-open his recruitment where he would attract a lot of interest.

Melvin Jones averaged 14 points, 5 assists 2 steals and 3 rebounds while shooting 48% from the field and 48% from 3 point, this season for North Idaho earning first team all conference. NIC placed 5 players on the all-conference team including MVP Renado Parker, and they should put 4 players this year in D-1 schools and 2 next year off this team.

Lady Griz Recruit Update: Kenzie De Boer

Lady Griz fall signie Kenzie De Boer was recently named the Washington 2A player of the year by the Bellingham Herald. Here is what they had to say about Ms. De Boer:

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: KENZIE DE BOER

School: Lynden Christian

Position: Forward

Year: Senior

What she did: The four-year starter helped lead the Lyncs to four consecutive state tournament appearances, placing first, second, third and fourth during the run ... De Boer was second in the Northwest Conference in scoring with 17.7 points per game and was named the NWC's Most Valuable Player ... The Lyncs' all-time leading scorer will continue her career at the University of Montana.

Coach's quote: "She's 5-11 and has great quickness to go along with that. She has a nice 3-point shot, she can beat you off the dribble and she has one of the strongest pull-up jump shots that we've had. Those three strong weapons make her an all-around player." --

Bobcats Recruit Oklahoma Big Man

Labels: , 0 comments

The Bobcats are recruiting 6-7 230lb Matt Qualls of Tahlequah high school in Oklahoma. I knew the Bobcat’s were recruiting Matt last fall but given the way his senior season was going I was figuring that he may be getting some looks from mid majors this spring. I have just heard that he has narrowed his list Montana State, Northern Arizona, and Stephen F. Austin. Matt is a coach’s son and as I understand it now, his father want him signing a letter of intent until the late period. Matt just finished up his senior season with eye popping 23.5 points, 14 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 2 assist and 2 steals a game while shooting 68% from the field.

Some of his highlights:

  • His points, rebounding and blocks were top in Oklahoma this year.
  • Quallis was a model of consistency shooting under 50% in only 3 games this winter (45%, 44% and 33% games).
  • He went perfect from the field twice (12 for 12 both games) this season, had some huge games scoring 38 points in two games.
  • He pulled down 11 or more rebounds in every game this season.
  • Averaged a double-double in all four of his high school seasons
  • High school career totals of 2,123 points and 1,291 rebounds.
  • 5A MVP, State tourney all star team, Oklahoma All-State first team.

As I said before Quall is a coach’s son, and is best described as an old school post player. A beast inside, he has great fundamentals, and a very high basketball IQ. He takes what the defense gives him. He can post you up inside and power over, or take it out to about 12-15 feet. He is a power player who does not mind getting physical, and will not be shooting 3 pointers. When tripled team he can hit the open man. He runs the floor well, great hands, and a decent athlete. I think he could make an impact in the Big Sky as a freshman.

Lady Cats Basketball / Bobcat Women’s Basketball

So are the known as the Lady Cat’s or the Bobcat Women? Well the official answer in Bozeman is the Bobcat Women’s team. In Missoula, though, it is the Lady Griz. When I attended MSU in the early 80’s the women’s basketball team at MSU was known as the Lady Cat’s basketball team, just like the Griz. It was way until the turn of the century. Sometime during former Bobcat women’s head coach Robin Potera’s tenure it was decided that the Lady Cat’s would from then on, would be know as, The Bobcat Women’s Basketball (alternately The Montana State Women’s Basketball) team. At the time, if memories serve me right, we were told that the women athletes at Montana State asked and voted for this name change. I have been told, though, that Potera was a driving force behind it. Now being somewhat of an enlightened man (although my ex-wife may disagree) I understood some of the reasons behind it. The “Lady Cats” term, somewhat marginalizes the team as not quite at the level as the men’s teams, and the term Montana State is never really used in conduction with the term “Lady Cat’s. Those on the other side will say it actually set the women up in there own “special” category and identity from the men. For my own part when it was announced all I cared was if the players wanted the change, I was all for it. Whether they saw it as an equity issue or simply a better name, I had no problem with it.

While Potera was coach, it was “The Montana State Women’s Basketball” and she would correct you, if you said the “Lady Cat’s, and I know this because she corrected me at a booster function. Since, Potera left / fired / not rehired, though, I have noticed that Lady Cat’s creeping back into the MSU vocabulary. This year when I was down for the Cat/Griz game I could have sworn I heard one of the MSU officials (Gamble or Fields refer) refer to them as the Lady Cats, and on the way out of the field house I also noticed a sign in the basketball office that said “Lady Cats”. I just got the feeling that no one seemed to care, it is kind of a Potato vs. potato (that does not work so well in written form). The other day I decided I wanted to find out, and get to the bottom of this so I contacted a couple people I know (and I use that term loosely) in the athletic department and asked them “Lady Cats” or “Bobcat Women”. I was told by both sources, yes it is officially the Bobcat Women, but we don’t mind if you say Lady Cats.

Do I have a point? Well yea kind of. Look if the women’s basketball team (or volleyball or track, or rodeo) wants to be called the Montana State Women’s team I have no problem, I support them 100%. That is what they should be called, no questions asked, and I will shut up, period. If they are ambivalent or actually like the term “Lady Cats” then you really should reconsider going back to it, for no other reason that marketing.

Right this moment, if got in my car and drove down to Target or Wal-Mart (if I shopped at Wal-Mart) and I could guarantee you with in 2 minutes of being there I will see at least one Lady Griz sweat shirt /t-shirt, and by the time I left I would have seen dozens. Next time you are in Missoula look for yourself. Now how many walking around Bozeman do you see Montana State Bobcat Women’s sweat shirts? I can not remember ANY. While it is true that a lot of women’s fans will simply purchase standard MSU gear, I would argue that with there own brand the women would sell more. I say that based on my experience here in Missoula, but also when you really look at who the women’s fans are. The men may have more fans that attend games (not by much though), the women’s fans are much more devoted. Over all I would argue that the women’s fans are much more invested in the program, and they like to show it. I hate to bring up the cliché of “tough economic times” but I think it is appropriate, to point out that for Bobcat women’s sports (and I am not limiting this to basketball) there is an opportunity to use the term as an asset to the program(s) and not a negative as it has been thought of in the past. I think you guy’s in Marketing refer to it as branding, and creating new revenue streams. The Women’s basketball boosters are a very unique demographic among the over all bobcat boosters and I think this is a way to reflect that.

Again though if the players (and notice I did not say coaches or administration) feels strongly about the more politically correct term than I will shut my mouth.

Griz Football Recruit: Ryan Fraley

Labels: 0 comments

Found this on the net and thought a few of you football minded Griz fans, might enjoy:

Iowa Biggest Wide Reciever?

At 6-foot-7, Sioux City North athlete Ryan Fraley excelled at tight end as a junior by using his size and athletic ability. But even with that height, this standout could be moving to wide receiver and seeing more balls thrown his way.

"I don't know yet. It is out there. We have another guy who is coming out. He played tight end and I played wide receiver that year. They could go back to that."

While Fraley has no preference as to his position next fall, what will be good for him is the team throwing the ball more.

"We were more of a running team than a passing team, which was alright. Next year we should go more pass than run."

The workouts now are in preparing for the upcoming baseball season. "I think we should be pretty good. Last year, we went to State and lost in the first round. This year, we bring back Dean McArdle who is throwing about 95."

Fraley named two schools that will be among their toughest competition in the MRC.

"I would probably say one of the Council Bluff schools. Either TJ or AL. It is just because they beat us last year and we had a problem on defense with them."

His recent visit to Iowa State on the recruiting front was something that Fraley enjoyed.

"It was really nice. They waited on you every step of the way. They started by opening the door for you."

There are two college programs that Fraley has upcoming visits setup for. "I know in two weeks I am going to Harding in Arkansas. Then during June, I have one for the University of Montana."

Bobcat’s and Grizzly’s recruit Minnetonka

The Bobcat and Griz have always recruited Minnesota pretty hard, but with North Dakota State moving up to D-1 it has been a little more difficult. Both the Cat’s and Griz have been recruiting Minnetonka High school in Minnetonka Minnesota. The two players that they have been showing interest in are Cole Stefan (#34) and Tor Anderson (#23)

Both the Cats and Griz have been showing interest in Cole Stefan. Stephen a 6-4 shooting guard just finished his junior season where he averaged 19 points a game. That was a 600% increase over his sophomore season when he buried deep in the Minnetonka bench. Minnetonka, a traditional Minnesota power in basketball, had seven players who accepted college scholarships in 2008. Stephen is now considered to be one of the top basketball prospects (#3) in Minnesota in the 2010 class, and is ranked by Rivals and Scouts as a 3 star prospect. Montana State was the first D-1 team to offer Stephan well over a year ago, but since then he has picked up 8 more scholarship offers and more schools who have recreantly stated to get into the recruiting picture. Stefan's offer list includes Drake, Northern Iowa, Illinois State, Nebraska, Colorado State, UW-Milwaukee, Montana State, Tulsa, and Oral Roberts. Other schools that have recently become involved are Arizona State, Gonzaga, Montana, Columbia, William and Mary, Marquette, and Minnesota.

Cole Stefan’s teammate Tor Anderson was also been offered by the Bobcats close to a year ago. Tor (a great Minnesota name) is a 6-3 185 lb shooting guard ranked who was ranked 12th prospect in Minnesota prior to this past season. Tor played for Prior Lake High school during his sophomore season averaging 15.3 points, 3 assist and 4 rebounds a game, but decided to transfer to Minnetonka high school to play with his best friend and AAU team-mate Cole Stefan for this past season. Anderson then ran into problems with the Minnesota transfer rules and was not allowed to play varsity ball for Minnetonka, this year, and was forced to play on the Minnetonka JV team. Needless to say he dominated at that level. In one game he hit 7 of 9, 3 point shots while scoring 32 points, and sitting out the much of the 3rd and all of the 4th quarter. Anderson is a deep three point threat, but also is also strong enough to post up smaller/skinnier guard down low. He is not he most athletic player but very crafty. Montana State has been recruiting him for close to a year now and are considered the favorite in landing his service at this early stage. Anderson and his family took an unofficial visit to MSU last December to check out the campus and take in a game. He is an early priority for the Cats 2010 class. (Sorry I could not find a picture that was worth a damn for Tor)

Bobcat’s Recruit Vegas Point Guard

Labels: 0 comments

I hear the Bobcat’s men basketball team is recruiting Mitrel Clark of Eldorado high school in Las Vegas, Nevada. Clark 5-10 145lb guard who averaged 20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assist, and 3 steals a game while shooting 45% from the field, 37% from the three point arc, and 82% from the charity stripe. During the post season he averaged 30 points over 4 games, and was recently named league player of the year. Clark is a deep three point threat, but also has the ability to penetrate and score in traffic. He is a decent athlete but has two gears fast and faster. He also has the reputation as a tough player, who plays big in big games. He hit game winning shots with seconds left in a half dozen games this year including one game where he refused to come out of a game after being fouled hard. He hobbled up to the line and sunk 2 free-throws with 9 seconds left, for the win. While playing point guard for his high school team, he is not considered a true point guard, but more of a scoring point guard. The big question about Clark is whether he will be able to get his shot off against taller stronger players in college. If he was a true point, or a few inches taller he would be going to the Pac-10. Right now he holds offers from Montana State, Seattle, Loyola Marymount, Central Michigan and Denver. Arizona State has asked him to walk-on, and he has already visited them. He will most likely sign later in the spring signing period, as he hopes to play in the major Fullcourt Press Easter Classic in Las Vegas to see if he can up his stock and get some more offers, which should tell you something right there.

Little Big Horn College: recruits the Bahama's

Labels: 0 comments

This is one of those stories that does not fit in perfectly to this blog but I really find this interesting. First most people in Montana do not even realise Little Big Horn College has a basketball team, second the recruit and sign almost the entire starting line up of this high school team, and third they go all the way to the Bahama's to get these players. Now I garentee you LBHC's recruiting budget has to minuscule. Fourth it is my blog and I like this story, becuase it put a smile on my face for sooooo many reassons.

Triple Threat- Tracy, Tiffany And Taniel Off To Little Big Horn
College

The women’s basketball program at Little Big Horn College (LBHC) in Crow Agency, Montana is just three years old but it is already looking to become a formidable team in the National Junior College Athletic Association. And according to head coach of the women’s basketball team Dominic Gaglia, he believes the three Bahamian players he expects to join his program this year will make a huge difference. He first learned of the three girls through National Coach Jurell Nairn.

Tiffany Wildgoose, Tracy Lewis and Taniel Poitier all recently graduated high school and are currently members of the Electro Telecom Cybot Queens that play in the local New Providence Women’s Basketball Association (NPWBA) where they have been honing their skills and preparing for the college game.

The three ladies that also have scholarship offers to other schools are expected to sign their letter of intent today April 8th to attend LBHC. In a recent interview they all seemed eager to get into school and begin working.

Poitier, 5’ 6” began playing basketball as a seventh grader with coach Simmons at SC McPherson Jr. High School before moving on to RM Bailey Sr. High School where she continued her basketball dreams while running track and field for a few years until deciding to focus on just basketball.

About seven years after she first picked up a basketball, the speedy Poitier is know speaking the basketball language explaining that she plays the number one (point guard) and number two (shooting guard) positions on her team.

“At this stage of my development in the game while playing the one I think I need to work on keeping my head up and knowing what is happening around me which will allow me to become a better play maker for my team, and when I’m at the two position I think I need to strengthen my shooting,” explained Poitier.

She say’s if she could choose which four-year college she would want to play for, she said UCLA. Poitier plans to study Computer Technology once she begins college.

LBHC is a public two-year community college chartered by the Crow Tribe of Indians. Eight Associate of Arts degrees are offered at LBHC.

Coach Wade Watson head of the Electro Telecom Cybots local men’s program trained Lewis who has been playing for six years beginning at Yellow Elder Primary School, before moving on to AF Adderly Jr. High School where she continued to “learn the fundamentals.”

Lewis, 5’ 10” small forward says right now she is more of a slasher, and that she is still working on perfecting many of the fundamental skills and developing a more consistent jump shot “because that is what coaches usually look for,” she said.

Lewis who played a big roll in helping the first-year Queens reach the NPWBA playoffs says she would like to play for the North Carolina Tar Heels once she has completed her eligibility at LBHC. Bahamian Waltia Rolle 6’6” recently signed a full scholarship to attend UNC.

Wildgoose who also likes UNC, already has a feathery touch on her perimeter jump shot. She has been playing since the fourth grade at Temple Christian School under the guidance of coach Keno Demeritte but is now “excited” to start college and begin studying Computer Information Systems and playing basketball.

“Playing in the NPWBA this year with a better team than the year before has given me a lot of experience and has helped to keep me in good condition, said Wildgoose.

However, the 5’ 10” guard who has very good ball handling skills admits that she has to strengthen her man-to-man defense, and it has been an area she has beenworking on and is willing to continue to work hard to improve.

All three of the players say they are ready for the physical and mental demands of college life for an athlete.

On Tuesday, coach Gaglia said that in his first year in 2008 after taking over the
position four days before the start of the season and with no recruits, the ladies team was able to win 10 games.

“I believe if we had Tracy, Tiffany and Taniel on our team last season we could have competed for the regional title,” he said.

The scholarship offer for each player was increased from the initial offer and now includes full tuition, textbooks, housing, meal plan and a round trip ticket to and from Montana.

Gaglia reminded that LBHC has a high set of academic standards and that major four-year universities “recruit heavily” from their region.

Galia has “personally” promised each of the players that he would help them with placement in a four-year school once they have completed their eligibility, provided they live up to agreed terms that include maintaining a 3.0 GPA at the end of the second year, have perfect attendance to class, practice and mandatory study table and cannot be caught in a position where they are disciplined by the school.

Additionally, each player must be able to complete a mile run at six minutes or under, score 200-plus on a basketball skills test, complete a 20 minutes conditioning station at an acceptable standard and pace, complete and document off season workouts as required and the student-athlete must be coachable.

Tiffany, Taniel and Tracy that spent the past year playing for the Queens will now become LBHC Lady Rams.

Montana State recruits Phillip "Tree" Thompson

Labels: 0 comments

I have heard the Bobcat’s are recruiting 6-8 240 lb. power forward /center Phillip “Tree” Thomas of Eastern Utah JC. Thomas averaged 10 points 4 rebounds, 56% FG and 71% ft last year. Thomas came on strong towards the end of the season averaging 14 points and 7 rebounds over the last 10 games of the season and was named to the SWAC All Tournament Team. The Bobcat’s recruited Thomas out of high school in California, but he signed with Idaho. He left Idaho when then head Coach George Pfeifer (now at MSU-Billings) was let go. Eastern Utah finished the season 24-7, but they really found there stride late in the season. Eastern should put 4 players in D-1 schools this year including 6-8 Darington Hobson who signed with New Mexico. Thomas holds offers from Eastern Washington who he will visit this week-end, as well as Cal. State Fullerton, MSU, and MSU-Billings. While no official visit has been set up with Montana State I believe they are looking to get one scheduled in the next few weeks. MSU and EWU are said to lead for his services.

Big Recruiting week for the Cats and Griz (Part 2 Griz)

Labels: 6 comments

With the spring signing period starting April 15th I thought I would give you a little scuttlebutt that I am hearing one the 4 Montana D-1 schools. Earlier I talked abut the calendar leading up to the signing period, as well as scuttlebutt on the Bobcat’s. The following is a the same for the Griz.

Grizzly Men’s Basketball – The Griz men I believe will look to sign one player possibly two. Shawn Stockton is gone, so the Griz are really looking over the JC ranks for a point guard who can come in and contribute right away. If they can not find the right JC player look for the Griz to sign another high school point, to go along with fall signee Will Cherry and let them battle it out. Winner gets the back up spot the other a redshirt. On another interesting recruiting note it appears the Griz have been contacting some of the power forwards /center they recruited last fall. They have also been contacting some upper end JC big men to see if they get any bites. I am not sure if they are actively recruiting big men, I do not believe they have offered anyone, or just testing the waters.

Lady Griz Basketball - The Lady Griz will be looking to sign at least two players this spring. I have heard that they are interested in signing a point guard for the future with at least one. I am not sure what they will be looking for at the other spot but the look really stacked at the wing position, so unless someone leaves the program I would guess they will stand pat at the 2 and 3. I am told they have at least one commit already but who and what position I am not clear.

Over all the Griz have been a lot quieter on the recruiting trail. Of the four programs the men’s Griz program is the only one that I have not heard of a possible commit. I think both programs are being pretty picky right now with who they offer. Niether is in a position of absolutely having to sign a particular player, so they can afford to be picky.

Big Recruiting week for the Cats and Griz (Part 1 Cats)

Labels: 5 comments

This is a big recruiting week for both the Men’s and Women’s programs for both the Griz and Cat’s programs. First of all the recruiting calendar has presented some tough scheduling for D-1 coaches this year. Typically the NCAA will put dead periods on the calendars around important holidays (Easter), around championships (the Final Four), and then a day or two around the start of the signing day (April 15th). This year all of these events happen with –in 10 days of each other. Again typically the week before the signing date is a big week to bring kids in for their official visits, this year programs will be limited between April 9th at 12:01 pm to April 12th mid night to getting recruits on campus through the program and on their way home. To make thing more difficult the NCAA also scheduled this time period to be a one of the few “contact periods” for the year, which is the only time coaches are allowed to make home visits with recruits. What this means too many head coaches will be trying to get in a few home visits Thursday and then flying back to get on campus for recruits who arrive on Friday.

I believe both campuses will be hosting a quite a few athletes this week-end. Here is some scuttlebutt on what I hear is going on with the four Montana D-1 programs.

Bobcat Men’s Basketball – The Bobcats should sign at least three athletes, and possibly four. JC transfer 7-0 center Michel Swita and 6-3 Colt Idol who both committed in December are on board and will sign on the 15th. Past that it could be interesting. Originally I had heard the Coaches were interested in signing a high school point guard or possibly a JC point that would have three years of eligibility. I think that is still what they want on paper, but I think you can mix in the term “or player too good to pass up”. It has come to my attention the Cat’s are looking hard at least two players that fall into the later category. The first is a high school forward who we have a great chance of signing, and the other is a transfer athlete (sort of) who would be eligible to play next year, but is a real long shot. Both players are big time scores and could contribute next year.

I believe the Cat’s are very high on center Kristopher Frazier, and point Eric Allen Cleveland’s East Tech high but they have not taken their ACT/SAT, and I do not believe the Cat’s get them in for a visit until the do.

Bobcat Women’s Basketball – The Bobcat Women, should sign two players this spring. I was told by a friend in Denver that fall signee Kelsey Roben may still be having trouble with here knee it is possible that that could open up a scholarship, but I think not. One of the two signees will be 6-0 Rachel Semansky from Highwood who committed earlier this winter. The second scholarship I believe will go to the best player available, and to that end I have heard from a couple sources that they may have already gotten a commit a Washington post player. I had someone throw a couple names at me but I am not sure if it was based on good information or a guess. Look for Tricia Binford to finish up her recruiting early in the signing period.
